Jersey Shore 8-10s come up short in softball state championship, 8-0
STRODES MILLS – The Bulldogs were in the title tilt!
The Jersey Shore 8-10U softball team battled its way to the State Championship contest Sunday as they went face-to-face with Caln in a winner take all title tilt.
It would be Caln that would capture the championship game winning 8-0.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs earned the title of State runner ups.
In the afternoon Championship game, the Bulldogs defeated Bullskin 5-4 to advance.
Caln, the defending state champ, won the toss and was the home team. Blakey Winner took the circle for Caln while Jersey Shore went with Riley Bowmaster.
Caln’s defense sent the Lady Bulldogs down in order in the first.
In the bottom of the inning, Caln started with a one-single by Megan Sheller. She moved up to second on a miscue and then stole third.
Winner helped her own cause, walking to put runners on first and third.
Teammate Rowyn McComsey poked a 2-run single, making it a 2-0 lead.
Defensively, Jersey Shore settled in keeping the damage minimal.
Wimmer struck out the side in the second.
Caln got things started quickly, loading the bases early. But a bouncer back to Bowmaster, sealed the first out at home.
But Avery Klems added to the Caln tally smoking a single back the middle, scoring two.
Caln added another run, taking a 5-0 advantage.
Cali Emel punched the Bulldogs first hit of the game as she lifted a shot just over top of second. She moved to second on a Caln error. She moved into scoring position, stealing third.
Going into the fourth, Jersey Shore was still battling keeping the score at just 6-0.
In the fourth, lead off hitter Kinley Reick walked.
But she was stranded as Caln’s defense held strong.
Jersey Shore left everything on the field as they held the explosive offense of Caln to just eight runs and taking them the distance.
