Brown picks up win on 90th birthday at Williams Grove

On Friday night some history was made when the Hall of Fame mechanic Dave Brown Sr. won on his milestone 90th birthday, and it had been eight months since Daryn Pittman last sat in a sprint car, at Williams Grove Speedway. It was eight years since he last visited victory lane at Williams Grove but that didn’t stop him from walking off with the $8,000 top prize in the 410 sprint car feature at the track on Friday night.

In fact, the 45-year-old Oklahoman scored a clean sweep of the night aboard the Don Kreitz No. 69K, earning $300 for quick time in time trials before going on to win his heat and then the main event.

Pittman started third in the 25-lap 410 sprint Hoosier Diamond Series race and watched as Troy Wagaman Jr. and Dylan Cisney took the green from the front row. Wagaman was in control over Pittman on the third lap when the first yellow flag of the race unfurled with three laps down for a spun Danny Dietrich who was running fourth.

Pittman chased Wagaman for the next eight laps before squeezing to Wagaman’s inside in the second corner to get command.

However as the laps wore on Pittman began sneaking away only to see another yellow flag bunch the field with four laps to go.

Pittman pulled away on the restart to a 3.413 second lead at the finish for the 18th Williams Grove sprint car win of his career. Wagaman was second followed by Lance Dewease, TJ Stutts and Australian Ryan Newton.

Newton’s run was a career-best at the oval and earned him the hard charger award after starting 12th in the field. Sixth through 10th went to Lucas Wolfe, Devon Borden, Jeff Halligan, Danny Dietrich and Ryan Taylor.

In the Dirty Deeds 25 358 sprint cars, Matt Findley scored his first ever checkers after years of trying to the tune of $2,500.

At Port Royal Speedway Logan Wagner visited victory lane at Port Royal Speedway, and he ended an almost year long drought. Logan Wagner, after starting seventh, would find himself sixth when Lance Dewease took the lead, and then he started to hit his stride. Wagner worked the top side of the corners to build momentum around the speedway, and over the next seven laps picked off cars to find himself in the runner-up spot.

A caution caused by Derek Hauck with five laps remaining would give Dewease one more shot at the lead, but Wagner would continue working the top side of the track to hold on for the $5,000 payday. Lance Dewease and Chase Dietz would round out the podium. Gerard McIntyre would win the Warrior Award given to a driver who finishes a bit further back in the field decided by pill draw, and Mike Walter would win the night’s hard charger for driving from 22nd starting spot to 11th.

In super late model competition, Rick Eckert charged from the ninth starting spot to pick up the $4,000 win as well as an extra $300 for winning from 9th or further back per the speedway’s rules.

For the 305 sprint car feature event, Austin Reed would start 12th and charge to the front over the course of a 20-lap race to pick up the win.

Port Royal Speedway will be back in competition on June 8 for late model speedweek which will pay the super late models $5,000 to win, with 410 sprint cars and limited late models also on the card.

At Lincoln Speedway it took 35 grueling laps of holding off the hottest driver in Central PA as Troy Wagaman celebrated with a much deserved wing dance in victory lane after winning the $10,119 Steve Smith Tribute Race.

“I was the #19 for a long time and it means a lot to win this race,” he said.

Saturday night’s win was Wagaman’s second of the year at Lincoln, his first coming at the Ice Breaker to kick off the season. Wagaman has been fast all year and lined up fifth for the start of the feature.

“I knew with Freddie starting second and Danny seventh, I had to get there and there early and then dictate the pace and do what I wanted in lapped traffic,” Wagaman said.

Wagaman’s plan worked and he scored one of the biggest wins of his young career.

A restart with less than 10 laps to go was key for Wagaman to hold off Dietrich’s charge to the front. Wagaman stayed on the bottom with Dietrich trying the top on the restart, giving it everything he had. Dietrich also tried the bottom in Turns 3 and 4, but could not make up the ground needed to catch up. Scott Fisher dominated the 358 sprint car action.

On Saturday, Lincoln Speedway is back in action with the Elijah Hawkins Memorial featuring the 410 sprints and 358 sprints.
