When Jersey Shore senior Reese Charney touched the wall in the girls 100 back race, she looked up at the scoreboard inside Williamsport’s natatorium to see what her final time was.
Wait a minute, 1:01.88? That couldn’t be right. Charney wasn’t expecting a time that high. Once she got out of the pool, someone told her what her actual time was.
The pad malfunctioned for a brief moment, and Charney won gold with a time of 59.25.
That sounded a lot better for Charney as it was a personal best for the senior.
“I looked up and I was like ‘oh, that’s not what I was expecting,'” Charney said with a laugh. “I got out and they said you swam a 59.2, I was like ‘h my gosh, I didn’t taper for this.’ I dropped like .30 seconds, so I’m really thrilled with that.”

And probably thrilled with yet another gold medal.
Charney was Jersey Shore’s only district champion on Day 2 of the District 4 swimming championships and secured her second individual event at the state meet after she won gold in the girls 50 free on Wednesday and helped the Bulldogs’ 200 medley relay team on Wednesday also qualify for the state meet in Bucknell.
“It means so much (to win two individual golds). It’s weird thinking this is my last districts. Like I said yesterday, it doesn’t feel like it at all, but it’s really special to go out like this with a personal-best time,” Charney said. “I’m really happy about it.”
Charney was the only swimmer in the girls 100 back field to break a minute in the race. Her teammate Kate Butzler was a silver medalist with a time of 1:02.47 and Danville freshman Leah Hasenbalg finished with bronze in 1:03.18. Lewisburg’s Jillian Muchler took fourth in 1:05.33.
“I mean honestly with the back stroke, I can’t see much, but I’m really good friends with Jillie,” Butzler said. “I was so happy to race right next to her. That meant a lot. It was really cool.”

Charney wraps up her four-year swimming career with the Bulldogs with plenty of hardware, although she had to think for a second how many medals she has.
“It’s quite a few,” Charney said with a laugh.
That it is.
She has six gold medals (five individual, one relay), two silver medals (both in 50 free), one bronze (200 medley relay in 2024), and five fourth-place finishes (400 free relay in 2025, 200 free relay in 2024, 200 medley relay in 2023, 200 free relay in 2022 and 100 free in 2022).
The senior Bulldog also took fifth in the 200 free relay in 2023 and 200 medley relay in 2022.

Fourteen medals of fourth or better in four years isn’t a bad career.
All in all, Charney’s more than happy to be going to states again this year and will look to place higher than her eighth-place finish last winter. But Charney noted that being able to share this season alongside her sister Brooke meant a lot.
“I really am (glad to go to states). It means a lot for me to go, but having Brooke here makes it mean so much more and you know?” Charney said. “It wouldn’t be the same without her.”
Butzler was Shore’s only silver medalist on Thursday as she took second in the 100 back behind Charney.
On the boys side, Jersey Shore’s Jayden Passetti took fourth in the 100 breast with a time of 1:06.82. Bloomsburg’s Chase Moore swam a sub-minute time of 57.70, setting a Williamsport pool record in the process. Athens’ Brayden Pettitt was second in 1:00.17 and Miles Fassero of Lewisburg finished third in 1:06.15.
