Jersey Shore’s Olivia Spotts heads to states in the javelin

DAVE KENNEDY/Sun-Gazette Olivia Spotts of Jersey Shore smiles with her gold medal after winning the javelin competition during this year’s Lock Haven High School Classic. Spotts won district gold in the javelin and is heading to the state meet.

Saturday wasn’t the best day of competition for Jersey Shore’s Olivia Spotts. The Bulldog was hoping to reach states in two events and competed in the discus.

But, unfortunately Spotts came up just shy in the discus of making a spot in states.

However on Thursday, Spotts did qualify, and did so in her best event: the javelin.

Spotts won district gold in the javelin on the first day of the District 4 track and field championships in girls Class AAA competition and then took silver on Saturday in the discus.

“Discus comes second this season after having successful season in jav, so I’ve been focusing on that,” Spotts noted. “So even to PR this season and place second, I did better this year at districts than last year even though I won (last year).”

Spotts was a silver medalist in the discus after hitting a mark of 104 feet, 6 inches. Her throw was great and was only behind Selinsgrove’s Isabella Furgison’s 111-3. Her mark of 104-6 was nearly a PR as well (104-10).

“It flew well, it had a good flight path and was high enough,” Spotts said. “I was waiting for wind to go down so I could do it. It was a clean throw.”

Competitors like Furgison, Shamokin’s Brylee Kess, Midd-West’s Leigha Wenger and Taitum Zarzyczny of Williamsport helped push the Bulldog to compete and throw well.

“Especially being seeded third today and having people in front of me give me a mark to aim for is always nice,” Spotts said. “I mean the state-qualifying mark was a little out of my range today, so I was just trying to push myself.”

Entering states, Spotts, a senior, is seeded sixth in the Class AAA javelin with her throw of 138-11. The only competitors seeded higher are Blue Mountain’s Makayla Keck (162-8), Perkiomon Valley’s Ava Flicker (158-9), Derry Area’s Sophia Mazzoni (156-0), Knoch’s Karlee Buterbaugh (148-9) and Upper Perkiomen’s Morgan O’Hara (139-6).

“My expectations are to place. To place and PR would be great, that’s the place to do it if anywhere,” Spotts said. “It’s great competition and a great environment. If I just push myself, I might place.”

If Spotts hits the marks she hit in districts, she has a solid chance of reaching the podium.

Spotts is glad with the season that she’s had so far this year as well and is glad to see the throws she’s made in the javelin being consistent.

“I’m very happy. Jav in general, that’s een successful, a PR with 143 and taking first at districts and making states,” Spotts said. “Hopefully getting a good seed there is great. The discus I’ve been nothing below 90s all year and breaking 100 again at end of the season when I need to is great.”
