Novitsky logs dig No. 500, as Bellefonte volleyball falls to Clearfield

TIM WEIGHT/For the Express The Bellefonte volleyball team poses with a sign recognizing Ella Novitsky for surpassing 500 digs following Monday's match against Clearfield.

Despite trailing Danville 14-7 in shots on the night, Aiden Lape’s outstanding play in goal allowed the Jersey Shore boys soccer team to escape Tuesday’s contest with a 0-0 draw, keeping its loss total at two on the season. It’ll look to earn its second victory on Thursday at Lewisburg, with that game set for 4:30 p.m.

CM boys soccer went on the road to Selinsgrove, and the two teams topping the Heartland-I standings settled things with a 3-3 tie. The Wildcats trailed throughout the game’s entirety but fought back on three separate occasions to tie it up.

Selinsgrove struck midway into the first half. Ten minutes later, Mycah Carson played a great ball into the box, and Cole Cooper calmly finished it to tie it at 1-1. The Seals then scored early in the second half to take the lead again, but again it wouldn’t last long. Tim Brinker placed a well-aimed corner kick right into Nolan Cross, who got it into the back of the net to tie it at two-apiece.

Selinsgrove managed for the third time to get a one-goal lead, one which almost stuck. However, a final push found Brinker at the top of the box, who unselfishly played Dylan Bechdel into space and finished it to the far post to tie it at 3-3 with just 6 seconds left.

In overtime, Central Mountain had a few chances to score but came up empty. Jaggar Pardoe had seven saves in the game. With the tie, the Wildcats are now 4-2-1 on the season. They are back on the road Thursday at Williamsport, with that game set for 6:15 p.m.

Though field conditions made it tough to score, the Bellefonte boys soccer team was able to prevail, defeating Bishop Guilfoyle by a score of 2-0 to continue its strong start to the season. Cameron Ballas got the ball rolling with a goal just seven minutes into the game, and Connelle Stabinger added one just a few minutes before the break. The latter finished with a goal and an assist, and the Red Raider defense was lock-down from start to finish.

“We moved the ball well and got the shots we needed; we just struggled to put them in the back of the next. Credit their goalkeeper, he made some really nice saves,” said Bellefonte boys soccer head coach Scott Martz. “Defensively, we locked down on them all night and did not give them much.”

South Williamsport won all five matches in straight sets, blanking Bucktail, 5-0. Mylee Morrison and Morgan Ertel both won without dropping a game and Emma McLaughlin won at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1.

Without its No. 1 and 2 singles players, the Central Mountain girls tennis team suffered a similarly tough loss, falling to Hollidaysburg, 5-0. No. 2 doubles duo Tess Aleley and Leah Wian were a bright spot on the day, battling Hollidaysburg’s No. 1 duo and picking up six games in the 6-3, 6-3 loss.

• Jersey Shore golf remained undefeated in the Heartland Conference, defeating Central Mountain in a battle of unbeaten squads. Kylie Schall led the way, taking top honors and shooting a 36. Carter Girton shot a 37, and Gracelyn Harsayni and Mason Heydrich 42s as Jersey Shore (10-0) defeated Central Mountain by six shots.

• Justin Nolt led the way for Lewisburg as it swept a quad meet with Central Mountain, Mount Carmel and Midd-West, winning in 17:16. Central Mountain went 2-1 and Damien Winner finished in sixth in 18:51. Lewisburg had three finish among the top five.
