Central Mountain football falls to Troy 70-29 in Week 9
TROY — Central Mountain traveled to Troy to face the defending Class AA state champions in Week 9 and knew it would be an extremely tough matchup.
Troy showed why they’re undefeated by scoring 70 points in a 70-29 rout over the Wildcats on Friday in Troy. While the Wildcats are still searching for a win, the 29 points is the most the team has scored in a single game this year.
The Wildcats hung with the defending state champions early. Troy led 14-0 after two Mason Smith touchdown runs in the first quarter of 1 and 26 yards. Dalton McDermott had a 9-yard touchdown run for Central Mountain with 11:11 to play in the second quarter which cut the deficit to 14-7.
Troy responded with a Smith 42-yard touchdown pass from Reed Palmer before Central Mountain again scored, this time on a Kyle Everett 59-yard touchdown pass to Mason Masorti.
The score cut the deficit to 28-14 as the two teams exchanged scores once more before the half.
Troy’s Smith had an 11-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 35-14 with 6:11 to play. With its final second-quarter drive, Central Mountain got into field goal range as Mycah Carson kicked a 31-yarder to make it a 35-17 deficit at the half.
That would be the closest Central Mountain came to rallying in the game.
Troy scored back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter as Smith found Reed Palmer for a 4-yard and 2-yard touchdown pass to make it a 49-17 lead. Central Mountain’s Gavin Heverly gave the Wildcats a slight spark with a 76-yard kickoff return to make it a 49-24 deficit.
Jayden Kutt punched in a score from a yard out with 1:06 to play to extend the lead for Troy to 56-24.
Smith would again find the endzone in the fourth quarter with an 11-yard run with 9:28 to play to go ahead, 63-24. The Wildcats scored their final touchdown when Everett found Mario Serafini for 8 yards and made it 63-29.
Mason Smith had his final touchdown on a 26-yard run with 5:46 to play before Kael Millard had a 15-yard run with 2:49 to play to end the game, 70-29.
Troy out-gained Central Mountain, 505-322, but the Wildcats had success both passing and rushing. McDermott had 97 rushing yards on 18 carries for a touchdown and Everett had 14 carries for 47 yards.
Evertt went 7 for 14 for 130 yards and had two touchdown strikes.
Mason Smith had a monster game for Troy, rushing it 19 times for 210 yards and five rushing touchdowns while Millard had 568 rushing yards and a touchdown and Jayden Kutt ran it 13 times for 80 yards and a score. In the air, Smith threw for 145 yards and three touchdowns on 6 for 8 passing.
Serafini had 55 receiving yards on three receptions and Mason Masoriti had two catches for 63 yards and a score.
