LHU men’s basketball falls to Sheperd in PSAC East opener
SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.V. – The Lock Haven men’s basketball team fell to Shepherd, 96-75, in its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division opener on Wednesday night.
Sophomore guard Dean Coleman-Newsome led Lock Haven with a game-high 29 points, going 10-of-23 from the field and 3-of-6 from 3-point range, while adding six rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes.
Dyllon Scott netted 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting with three assists and Devon Nelson delivered a strong all-around effort with 13 points, five rebounds and two assists.
Keith Warren chipped in eight points with two rebounds and two assists, while Mike Knouse added six points on a perfect 3-of-3 night from the floor.
Shepherd controlled the game with an efficient offensive performance, shooting 66 percent from the floor and 38 percent from 3-point range. The Rams grabbed a 49-34 lead at halftime behind their accuracy from deep and continued to hold the advantage throughout the second half.
Lock Haven cut the deficit to 10 early in the second half behind baskets from Coleman-Newsome and Nelson, briefly swinging momentum back in favor of the visitors. Shepherd, however, responded with timely trips to the rim and key perimeter makes to restore a comfortable margin and close out the victory on its home floor.
As a team, Lock Haven shot 48.3 percent from the field (29-of-60), including 5-of-19 from beyond the arc, and converted 12-of-16 attempts at the free-throw line. The Bald Eagles tallied 26 rebounds, eight assists and 20 points off the bench, and they did much of their damage inside with 38 points in the paint.
The Bald Eagles fall to 5-8 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC, while Shepherd improves to 8-5, 5-2 PSAC.
Lock Haven returns to action on Saturday at 3 p.m., where it’ll visit Kutztown for a PSAC East battle.
