Jersey Shore girls basketball falls at Loyalsock in front of students

Madison Perry missed second-quarter time Monday afternoon. Addi Barowy missed game time earlier this season, twice spraining her ankle.

Both made up for lost time Monday afternoon at Loyalsock’s assembly game against Jersey Shore. The loud cheers they heard after every big play made even more exciting.

Perry scored nine of her 13 points in a game-breaking third quarter and Barowy ignited a big second-quarter run with two 3-pointers as Loyalsock wowed the students who packed the gym and defeated Jersey Shore, 59-34.

“It’s so great,” Perry said. “Our school spirit has been so good this year and I feel like everybody coming out makes it so much better.”

“It’s so cool. It just fuels the excitement and makes me want to hit more,” Barowy said. “It’s a credit to my teammates. They set me up in those positions.”

RALPH WILSON/For The Express Loyalsock's Madison Wertz (34) brings the ball under the basket during a high school girls basketball game against Jersey Shore at Loyalsock on Monday.

All the Lancers played well and Loyalsock (16-6) played one of its most complete games this season, clinching a wildcard berth in the Heartland Conference Tournament Wednesday against Central Columbia. That game will be at 6 p.m, followed by Hughesville playing Shikellamy with the championship held Friday.

Alaina Dadzie (17 points, 15 rebounds) collected a double-double, Jaekairah Harden (12 points) made four steals and Maddie Wertz scored eight points. Addie Bastian helped fuel a swarming defense and the Lancers continued heating up as the playoffs approach, winning their fifth straight game.

“We were a little sluggish on Saturday and I think we needed an environment like this to not even realize you’re tired,” Loyalsock coach Curtis Jacobson said. “Coming in you don’t know what to expect with the students here. We talked before the game about enjoy the moment, but what happens between these blue lines matters and we have to be ready to go. That’s a challenge because there’s a lot going on, and they handled it well.”

They sure did.

It was not that Jersey Shore played a bad game, just that Loyalsock played an outstanding one. All five starters scored in the first quarter and the Lancers made 15 of 24 shots in the middle quarters when they turned a close game into a rout.

“I feel like most games we try and make good passes and score off each other,” Perry said. “I feel like this game we had a lot of good passes and good shots and it really brought up the energy and spirit.”

Perry picked up her second foul early in the second quarter and did not play against that half. But the sophomore dominated the third quarter, making all six of her shots from the field and foul line. A Swiss Army Knife-type player, Perry was lethal in transition, made two steals, caused defensive disruptions and also hit a first quarter 3-pointer.

A Perry steal and coast-to-coast layup put Loyalsock up 20 early in the third quarter and she scored five straight points off a putback and steal which led to a 3-point play as Loyalsock imposed the mercy rule later that quarter.

Perry was a key reserve on last year’s 3A state championship team and has blossomed into a reliable starter as a sophomore. Her all-around game against Jersey Shore shined a light on how dangerous she can be going forward.

“She gets her hands on a lot of stuff on the defensive end and her attacking the rim for us and making an open shot just dictates a lot of stuff of what we try and do,” Jacobson said. “Even if she doesn’t have the headlines all the time she has a piece in a lot of what we do.”

RALPH WILSON/For The Express Jersey Shore's Gracelyn Frantz (22) brings the ball past Loyalsock's Addison Barowy (24) during a high school girls basketball game at Loyalsock on Monday.

So does Barowy.

The junior guard put together a strong offseason and seemed poised for a big breakout before spraining her ankle in the season opener against Montoursville. Less than a week after she returned, Barowy re-injured the ankle but returned a few weeks ago and played well at Hughesville.

That was just a start and Barowy fanned the flames in the second quarter when she drilled consecutive 3-pointers as Loyalsock built a 36-17 halftime lead.

Barowy also made a steal and was one of five Lancers who scored in that second quarter as a game which featured four first quarter lead changes started leaning heavily Loyalsock’s way.

“I’m super grateful for the opportunity to get back. It’s just great being back,” Barowy said. “They (the starters) work really hard out there and I just want to contribute in any way that I can to help increase our score and wins. I just want to do what I can to help.”

RALPH WILSON/For The Express Jersey Shore's Avery Depasqua (10) shoots around Loyalsock's Madison Wertz (34) during a high school girls basketball game at Loyalsock on Monday.

“She put in a lot of time this offseason to become a better shooter because it wasn’t her strength last year. Now it’s become an aspect that she gives us. It’s kind of like how we felt about Jillian the last couple of years, when the ball leaves her hand, you feel like it’s going to go in every time she shoots it,” Jacobson said. “She has an athletic ability that she doesn’t understand she has and I don’t think anyone does because she hasn’t consistently demonstrated that but she has it. We’re excited to see what she’s going to do us for the rest of the way and into next year.”

Dadzie produced a double-double by early in the second quarter, but Jersey Shore could not key on her because every player was surging. Wertz scored in every quarter, Bastian hit an early 3-pointer and all the pieces came together.

That was big because Jersey Shore came out strong and led 11-10 following a Marlee Lehman 3-pointer. Avery DePasqua scored the team’s first five points and Kylie Schall scored a team-high 11 points. Jersey Shore has enjoyed a strong season after graduating four starters from last year’s team and is line to earn the No. 2 seed for the upcoming District 4 Class AAAA playoffs.

Before the playoffs, Loyalsock will play in the HAC Tournament for the sixth time in nine years. That’s an impressive achievement, considering this league has produced two state champions, three state finalists and five state quarterfinalists during that time.

“We’re excited for it,” Perry said. “I feel like we’ve grown since the last time we played (Central).”
