Local roundup: Penns Valley girls fall to Bellwood-Antis in regular-season finale
In Wednesday night’s regular-season finale, the Penns Valley girls basketball team struggled to slow down Bellwood-Antis’s Lily Gerwert, who scored 26 points to lead the Blue Devils to victory, 65-48.
Though the Rams cut their deficit to four before halftime, Bellwood-Antis outscored them 34-21 through the second half to get the job done. In a physical game that featured 46 free throws, the Blue Devils also shot 20-for-26 from the line.
For Penns Valley, Paige Johnson led the way with 13 points, and Elle Dinges also finished in double figures, going 9-12 from the line to finish with 11. Sydnie Dalton contributed eight points and a three-pointer, and Ellie Romig and Jordan Johnson each added six.
With its regular season now wrapped up, Penns Valley will look ahead to the District 6 Class AAA playoffs, starting with a road matchup against No. 4 seed River Valley (11-10). That game is set for next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
After three quarters of even basketball, South Williamsport stiffened up defensively, holding the Bucktail girls to just two points through the fourth quarter to win on the road, 47-31. Prior to the quarter, its lead was just five.
Carly Quimby hit four three-pointers to lead the Mounties with 16 points. Ella Moore made it two Mounties to surpass double figures, finishing with 13. And Maddie Reidy added nine. For Bucktail, Eva Sockman led the way, scoring 16 of the team’s 31 points on the night. Kendall Wagner followed her up with eight.
