People watch the flood waters from the rooftop of a building on E. Church St., Lock Haven, in 1889. While no precise date was listed with the photo, it is very likely that this is from the Johnstown Flood, which occurred on May 31-June 1, 1889. A National Weather Service report on Lock Haven’s highest river crests lists the 1889 flood as reaching 29.8 feet, with the cause cited as nine inches of rain falling in 36 hours, four of which fell within eight hours. According to the report, “most of Williamsport, Lock Haven, Muncy, Jersey Shore and Montgomery were submerged.”
