WILLIAMSPORT — UPMC in North Central Pa. hospitals are receiving statewide recognition for their efforts to support and raise awareness about organ, eye, and tissue donation.

UPMC Williamsport earned third place as a top-performing hospital for the Gift of Life Donor Program (GLDP) in The Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania’s (HAP) 2025 Donate Life Pennsylvania Hospital Challenge. UPMC Muncy was also designated as a “Platinum” performer with the GLDP.

“Organ donation is one of the most selfless acts a person can make,” said Patti Jackson-Gehris, president, UPMC in North Central Pa. “Behind every donation is a family choosing to turn loss into hope, and a patient whose life is forever changed by that generosity. We are humbled to support the Gift of Life Donor Program and to honor those who make this extraordinary gift possible.”

The annual campaign encourages Pennsylvania hospitals to increase organ, eye and tissue donation awareness within their hospitals and communities. HAP partnered with the Pennsylvania Department of Health and the two organ procurement organizations serving Pennsylvania — the Center for Organ Recovery & Education and Gift of Life Donor Program — to support the challenge.

“Transplantation is one of the most significant advancements in the history of medicine. Still, the need for organs is far greater than the number available,” said Richard D. Hasz, President and CEO of Gift of Life. “Gift of Life’s mission includes educating our community about the powerful impact they can make by taking less than a minute to register as an organ, tissue and cornea donor.”

UPMC in North Central Pa. promotes organ donation through various events throughout the region including special flag-raising ceremonies highlighting the kickoff of National Donate Life Month. The system also provides education and encouragement to consider organ donation through social media, system marketing and community outreach.

This year, 121 hospitals statewide participated in the challenge.
