Dotterer Dairy’s 3rd annual Sunflower Maze to benefit medical personnel
MILL HALL — Dotterer Dairy’s unique sunflower maze is returning and the family-owned business has put an extra special twist on its design.
The maze is open from now and for about two weeks. The length of time is dependent on weather conditions.
The maze will be open each day from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday through Saturday along Nittany Valley Drive just outside of Mill Hall.
This year’s maze is certainly a unique one as well.
In honor of the medical staff who have helped its family and its employees — who are an extension of their family — the Dotterers chose to etch into its maze various medical symbols. The family will also be donating 10 percent of the proceeds from the maze towards the Hillman Cancer Center in Williamsport and Ronald McDonald House in Danville.
Both medical facilities are near to the Dotterers’ hearts, according to Susan Dotterer.
Susan’s grandson, Branlin, spent time in Danville as well as Mount Nittany after he was born prematurely
“When Branlin was born he was Life Flighted to Danville Geisinger and put on a CPAP machine along with other life saving devices,” a statement from the family said. “Due to being premature, his lungs were not fully developed and he needed the special care that the NICU provided him.”
Susan emphasized just how wonderful the staff in the NICU were.
“The doctors and nurses at that NICU were truly phenomenal,” she said.
The family was so extremely grateful to the staff in Danville, particularly its NICU, that it chose to honor them during this year’s maze.
“We will be forever grateful to them for going the extra mile to provide the top notch care that our baby needed,” the family said.
The Dotterers chose Hillman Cancer Center in honor of an employee’s wife, Pamela Whitehill, who lost a courageous battle with cancer in March.
“Dotterer Dairy doesn’t just have employees, we have team members that make up a big family. When tragedy strikes, it affects us all in a ripple effect,” a statement from the family said.
Pamela, a dairy farmer herself, was considered a part of the Dotterer Dairy family in so many ways.
“From diagnosis two years ago to her passing, she was provided exceptional care and ongoing support from her family, friends and her medical team. We cannot imagine what it takes as medical professionals to provide this level of care over a period of time, knowing there may not be too many options left,” the statement said.
Due to the care Pam received, the Dotterers felt it was only right that Hillman Cancer Center benefit from the annual maze.
The maze will cost $7 with kids age 3 and under admitted for free. Maps are offered to those who may want assistance in navigating the roughly 18 acres worth of maze.
According to Susan, traveling the maze won’t be the only activities offered.
There will be flower arrangement classes, yoga, basketball throws into a gravity wagon, a corn pit for children to enjoy, cornhole, photo opportunities, face painting and a chance to purchase fresh produce.
The sweet corn wagon will be set up and offer a dozen ears of corn for $6; $3 for half a dozen; or 50 cents per ear.
Cut flowers will also be available for $2 if an employee picks them or $1 to pick your own sunflower.
Other items up for sale will include Sunflower Maze t-shirts and jewelry.
And if you’re hungry, don’t worry, Dotterer Dairy has lined up a wide range of food vendors to pick from that include:
— The Cottage Restaurant
— Mini Donuts
— Hungry Hogs on Aug. 5, 7 and 11
— Cogan’s Concessions
— Sips and Giggles
— Little Pines Coffee Company.
Two special events are also planned during the Sunflower Maze. This includes a special glow night on Friday, Aug. 9 from 9 to 11 p.m.
Participants will have the chance to purchase glow sticks — or even bring your own — as you navigate the sunflower maze.
The cost that evening will be $10 per person with children 3 and under entering for free.
Farm tours will also be offered on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The cost will be just $5 per person, with children 3 and under entering for free.
The tours will give participants an inside look into how Dotterer Dairy operates.
Credit cards will not be accepted for any of the activities, but cash or Venmo at Dotterer-Grown, will be accepted.
