Easter Fun and Traditions

Everyone has different and unique ways of celebrating Easter. Easter is the oldest and most important holiday of the Christian Church, it celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Some of the most common ways that people celebrate Easter is Easter egg hunts, Easter baskets, having an Easter dinner with family and even friends, and also coloring eggs. So lets talk about how these Easter traditions became a thing and why people do them and why people enjoy this great holiday!

Some may wonder why with Easter there is the Easter bunny. Well this tradition is thought to have come from Germany. People say that in the 1700s. when Germany immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania carried their tradition of an egg laying hare, called an “Osterhase” to America with the children made nests so that the Easter bunny could lay colorful eggs.

Eventually this spread across the U.S. and the fabled Easter bunny on Easter morning goes around and delivers chocolate and other types of candy and gifts and decorated baskets replaces the nests. Children also leave out carrots for the bunny just in case he gets hungry from all his hopping.

Now lets talk about the Easter baskets. When you get your Easter basket it is always full of goodies, like chocolate, candy, or even little gifts, but the real reasoning behind this is because seedlings and eggs are associated with new life. So with the basket, it is supposed to symbolize the new life of Jesus Christ. With the Easter basket it is mostly pointed towards the younger generation of people because they are the ones that enjoy doing there egg hunts and are excited to see what the Easter bunny surprised them with in their basket.

People also have Easter egg hunts, an Easter egg hunt is when there are eggs hidden throughout certain areas which are there for adults and children to look for and there is normally a little surprise in the egg. There is also a golden egg which is normally hidden in the most difficult place to find. In this golden egg there is normally a unique prize that you receive from finding the golden egg.

This tradition of Easter egg hunts also came from Germany, the first Easter egg hunt heard of was held in Fort Worth so the children could go and find the colorful eggs.

One of the most common Easter traditions is an Easter dinner. Now there is a variety of things that people eat on Easter but some of the more common things are ham, roasted lamb, and for dessert maybe a few chocolate eggs. Easter dinners are a tradition because it brings everyone together to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. It is also just good family time and a nice way to get together to celebrate the holiday.

Another tradition is coloring eggs. Coloring eggs has been a tradition for centuries, it is said that when Mary Magdalene went to visit the tomb of Jesus and discovered that he was no longer there her basket of eggs turned bright red. That is why people still color eggs today, because Easter is the celebration of Jesus Christ’s resurrection and is a very important holiday to people to this day.
