Understanding pretend

Four-year-olds understand pretend.
Recent bomb threats in Lancaster have me shaking my head. Adults, heavily male, are so frightened of drag queen story-hour they can’t see that which is clear to a four-year-old.
Four-year-olds understand someone dressing up funny and reading a children’s, age-appropriate story book is just pretend. It’s fun, nothing else. Sad, some adults would rather threaten the librarian, see a library destroyed, yes, even bombed, than see someone entertain children in a dress-up costume.
I wonder, do these adults still have invisible friends that talk to them? Have they lost the line between pretend and reality that a four-year-old can see?
