Morality

Kathryn V. McFate Loganton In the dictionary, there is a explanation about morality: it says that it is a conviction of our principals. Donald Trump has spoken on this, saying, “His own morality is the only thing that can stop him.” I don’t see how a man who has hurt our country with his policies, has been found guilty of hurting others, has a friend that is a convicted sex criminal and has used our government to further his greedy agenda and doesn’t care about anybody should be president. He continues to give full support to the inept people that he has placed in our ...

Behind the Badge

Joseph Regan Montgomery County, Pa. Law enforcement officers are often seen only through the lens of the uniform they wear. Before the badge is pinned on and the shift begins, they’re people just like everyone else. They wake up early, tie their shoes and drink coffee before heading out the door. The difference is that when law enforcement officers leave for work, they do so knowing there’s a chance they may not come home. They step into uncertainty by responding to unpredictable situations and placing themselves in harm’s way to protect others. It’s a reality that demands ...

Being nice to enemies

Jim Newton Itasca Someone once said to be nice to your enemies, it’ll drive them crazy. There’s a lot of that going on between President Trump and soon to be former Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. It started with Greene’s surprisingly friendly appearance on Bill Maher’s “Real Time” show recently. Just when I thought I was dreaming, she announced her resignation from Congress. Trump responded calling her Marjorie “Traitor” Greene. Later, in typical Trump fashion, he walked back his remarks calling her a “nice lady”. Many were shocked, but why? Such ...

Gasoline rip offs

Robert A. Miller Mill Hall On Jan. 6, 2026, I went to Hogan Blvd. to buy gasoline for my car. I was extremely disappointed to see gas increased 26 cents per gallon overnight. Then proceeded to downtown to see what Weis price would be. Noticed that 7/11 was still at $2.93/gallon. Weis was the same. The truck stops in Lamar were as of Monday evening, prices at $2.89/gallon. What is the problem here? Was it because Mr. Sheetz passed away, so let’s hike gasoline? Usually when there is a price increase, everybody goes up. Now it is taking days for others to follow, if at all. The ...

Dad retired at 65, I’m now 65

Theron G. “Terry” Noble Dubois, Pa. Fond memories of “the Greatest Generation” permit reflection of where we are, how we got here and more importantly, how we extricate ourselves from this downward spiral. After turning back fascism and other authoritarian foes, the Greatest Generation came back, rebuilt Europe and reshaped America. The post-war industry provided many with middle-class incomes, sufficient to raise and educate families, even offering some frills. America blossomed. Common was the factory employing thousands for generations. With many union members, organized ...

From insurrection to immunity

Tim Mannello Williamsport January 6, 2021 was not a misunderstanding, a protest gone wrong, or a footnote in political history. It was a full blown assault on American democracy. A mob, motivated by Donald Trump’s false claims about the election, stormed the U.S. Capitol and violently clashed with Capitol Police and D.C. Metropolitan Police. More than 140 officers were beaten, crushed, sprayed or trampled. Five officers died in the aftermath. One rioter died. The attack left nearly three million dollars in damage to the seat of the American government. Federal prosecutors charged ...
