No losers in the playoffs

Jake Pickering Eureka The unavoidable fact that one of the NFC South’s four terrible teams is going to make the playoffs this season as a National Football League division winner is a travesty. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Carolina Panthers, Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints are four of the worst teams in the National Football Conference. However, since one of the NFC South’s four flailing franchises will win their subpar division by default, one of these embarrassingly bad NFC South teams will be playing in the playoffs at home in January 2026, while more worthy National ...

MAGA’s New Year’s fireworks are lighting up the countryside

Kimball Shinkoskey Woods Cross, Utah President Trump’s New Year’s fireworks have brightened up the sky but also are burning down the earth like the recent Palisades fire lit up homes along the SoCal coastline. Trump’s two favorite, but highly dangerous, New Year’s gifts to the nation are illegal war-making and political bribery. The least legitimate leaders across the globe typically run the most aggressive nations. Today those leaders include Vladimir Putin, Benjamin Netanyahu and Donald Trump. There is a reason for this causal relationship. The pathway to long-term ...

Nothing could be clearer

Kimball Shinkoskey Woods Cross Nothing could be clearer as we start the New Year than the fact that the average American has chosen to ignore any sophisticated response to our darkest hour since the Civil War. Instead, we are retreating to those recesses of ignorance, inaction and self-pleasure where we hide our faces from reality and from personal duty. We saw that in clear focus over the holidays when we just bathed ourselves in self-indulgent tradition, normalcy and withdrawal from community, as the only real forms of action we can think of to engage in. They may want you to pay a half million bucks and they’ll squeeze the rest of the tax dollars out of other ...

Tim Mannello Williamsport Here’s a quick-fix to the nation’s healthcare problem: Immediately take the President, members of Congress, Senators, cabinet members and members of the Supreme Court as well as Governors, state legislators, state cabinet members, elected officials at all levels of government and state and local judges off of their current government paid health plans and put them all on Medicaid.

De Rugy is wrong

Fred Bucheit Howard It took one minute to find that Veronique de Rugy in the Monday, Dec. 8, edition of The Express didn’t tell the whole story in her column. She claims that we are all doing wonderfully in an economic sense because income for the bottom fifth of the population has doubled since 1990 and wealth for the bottom quarter has tripled. While that is a mostly true statement, she neglects to inform us that since 1990 the purchasing power of the dollar has dropped by about half. So, if you double the amount of coffee in your cup, but then cut that amount in half, where are ...
