SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Washington Commanders, 37-20, on Christmas Eve at home, and while San Francisco already has the NFC West clinched and a playoff berth ensured, the win was meaningful for Central Mountain graduate and Mill Hall native Robbie Gould.
Gould, in his 18th season in the NFL, kicked field goals of 26, 23 and 35 yards in the Saturday afternoon win, which moved the former Wildcat up the all-time field goals made list.
“Put a bow on that W!!! We moved up to 8th all time in field goals made in @NFL history,” Gould tweeted on Saturday night.
Gould has kicked 443 career field goals, moving past Phil Dawson (ninth at 441) and Jason Elam (tenth at 436). John Kasay, who played with the Seattle Seahawks, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints between 1991 and 2011, is seventh on the list with 461. Gould entered his 18th season with 408 career field goals made. Gould is 18 from tying Kasay and moving into seventh.
The all-time field goals made leader is former New England Patriot and Indianapolis Colt Adam Vinatieri with 599. Morten Anderson is second at 565, followed in order by Gary Anderson (538), Jason Hanson ($95), John Carney (478) and Matt Stover (471).
Gould has been with San Francisco for the past six seasons, and set a single-season high with 39 made field goals in 2017.
The Mill Hall native is 23 for 27 on field goals this season with an 85.2 percentage and is 10 for 11 on kicks between 20 and 29 yards, 5 for 5 on kicks 30 to 39 yards, 6 for 9 on kicks from 40 to 49, and is a perfect 2 for 2 on field goals longer than 50 yards.
Gould played at Penn State before beginning his NFL career in 2005 with the Chicago Bears, playing with Chicago until 2015. He spent one season in 2016 with the New York Giants before signing with the San Francisco 49ers. He has appeared in two Super Bowls: XLI with Chicago against Indianapolis, and LIV with San Francisco against Kansas City.
In the postseason, Gould is perfect as a kicker. He’s 20 for 20 in NFL postseason games in his career.
