Shore junior softball finishes states as runner-up, falls to Indiana in title

TURBOTVILLE- Jersey Shore finished second in the state Junior Softball tournament Friday, falling to Indiana for the second straight day, 10-0 in 5 innings at the Moser Complex.

Earlier Friday, Shore beat Radnor-Wayne 8-5 in the elimination round to earn the rematch.

Indiana led 4-0 in the first inning when Sam Martin hit an inside-the park grand slam down the left-field line.

Maddie Twinchek added another inside the park home run, a 3-run hit to right, in the fourth inning. Tenley Anderson tripled and scored in the fifth to end the game early.

Abigail Swigart’s bunt single was Shore’s lone hit off Indiana pitcher Ella Worthington, who struck out 12 and walked 3. Haley Kitner walked twice for Shore, and Amelia Thomas walked once.

Thomas took the loss, allowing 8 hits with 5 strikeouts.

Indiana, which advanced to the East Regionals next week, has a handful of players who were league age 14 and just finished their freshman year of high school, playing regular season games at night after their school team activities ended for the day this past spring. Other leagues, including some locally, have done that before.

Against Radnor-Wayne, Shore pulled away with a four-run fifth inning that started when Lucy Brigandi walked and scored on the first of three wild pitches. Neveah Reed and Thomas also scored, as did Allie Cimini on a Payton Pennycoff double.

Annabelle Fry earned the complete-game win, striking out 5 and allowing 7 hits and 2 walks. She also doubled home Thomas and scored on a wild pitch as part of a 3-run first inning to erase a 2-run deficit.

Shore finished tournament play as District 12 and Section 3 champs, beating Williamsport and Lewisburg to reach states. Shore finished the tournament 6-3, combining the roster from Nippenose and Hepburn-Lycoming regular season that also saw contributions from South Williamsport players. It beat Radnor-Wayne twice in states. It lost 12-1 in 5 innings Thursday to Indiana to fall into the elimination round.

DuBois and Caln Twp. of Chester County rounded out the 5-team state tournament field.

The state tournament runs July 17-21 at Wilkes University. The Junior Softball World Series runs July 27-Aug. 2 in Kirkland, Wash.
