The Wildcats won 4-0.

A busy week of tennis, a senior night victory and a homecoming football game highlighted the week in sports at Central Mountain High.

Girls tennis concluded its season with a very busy week. On Monday, the CM ladies were narrowly defeated at Bucktail, 3-2. Wins for the Wildcats were secured by No. 3 singles player Kassie Williams and the doubles pairing of Leah Wian and Tess Akeley.

The ladies would then win back-to-back matches against Williamsport and St. Mary’s on Wednesday and Thursday respectively to conclude their 2025 season with a 9-8 record.

The Williamsport match was a 3-2 win with victories coming from each of the three singles players, Lucy Walker, Lane Walker and Kassie Williams. Against St. Mary’s, it was a clean sweep for the Lady Cats as they cruised to a 5 to 0 team win.

In between all the match action was the District 6 Doubles Tournament.

CM was represented by the Walker sisters playing as a team, as well as the pairing of Williams and Audra Eaton. The Walkers lost in three competitive sets while Williams and Eaton fell in two to be eliminated from competition.

The boys soccer team picked up a nice senior night win by a score of 4-0 over league foe, Shikellamy. As has been the case throughout most of the season, the CM defense was solid, and the offensive workload was distributed.

Goals in the contest came from Nolan Cross, Yayfran Sanchez, Mycah Carson and Cole Cooper. With the win, the Cats’ overall record moved to 7-5-2 on the season. CM honored 11 seniors prior to the game as well.

Cross-country action took place at Hughesville on Tuesday afternoon as the Cats and Lady Cats were in action against the home team as well as South Williamsport, Southern Columbia, Mifflinburg and Muncy.

Both CM teams would record four wins and one loss on the day, as each fell only to the very strong Hughesville teams. For the girls, top runners included Emma Wolfe, Kaylie McCloskey and Abigail Winslow while the boys were led by Damien Winner, who placed third overall, Latrell Walker, who recorded a new PR, and Shane Walker.

Unfortunately, the Wildcat football team endured yet another long evening on Friday as the Montoursville Warriors came to Malinak Stadium and ruined CM’s chance for a homecoming-game upset by beating the Cats, 44-0.

Montoursville used an explosive ground game, a few key passes and a stifling defense to cruise to the win. CM was able to generate a little bit of offense both on the ground and via the pass but was ultimately unable to do enough to put numbers on their side of the scoreboard.

Individually defensive leader and junior linebacker Kole Corman eclipsed the 100-tackle mark for the second consecutive season. Now 0-7 on the season, the Wildcats will welcome Mount Carmel to Bald Eagle Township this week as they attempt to once again break their long losing streak against a team that is playing well at this point in the season.

The girls soccer team played perhaps their most competitive game of the season on Tuesday before falling to visiting Mifflinburg in overtime by a 2-1 score. CM’s goal was credited to freshmen Lily McGonigal, who scored off an assist by Leah Karstetter.

Looking to build off their solid performance the Lady Cats hosted Milton on Saturday morning. However, despite battling throughout the contest, the young CM squad was unable to register a goal and fell to the Lady Black Panthers by a 4-0 score.

TIM WEIGHT/For the Express Central Mountain’s Reese Walizer (16) celebrates a point with her teammates during a high school girls volleyball match against Central Columbia on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2025.

Prior to the contest CM inducted former Lady Wildcat standout Sara (Hawksworth) Geyer into the school’s sports hall of fame.

For the volleyball team, it faced one match and one tournament last week. After a very competitive and thrilling 3-1 win over Williamsport that pushed CM’s undefeated match record for the season to 11-0, Chipp McCann’s squad headed to Horseheads, New York to participate in a tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Cats went 4-2 in pool play, which earned them a right to participate in the gold-medal championship bracket. In bracket play, McCann’s squad won their first contest before dropping the second to be eliminated from the tournament after a solid day of play. This tournament was another of several that the Lady Cats have participated in this season as an attempt to be better prepared to face the stiff competition that they will face when playoff time rolls around, which will be here before we know it.

Team of the Week: The boys soccer team’s win over Mifflinburg was a good one and put them into consideration for this week’s honor. However, given the boys played just once, we are given the honor this week to the girls’ tennis team. Yes, they did lose a close 3-2 contest to Bucktail but proceeded to collect wins over Williamsport and St. Mary’s all the while playing the matches without standout No. 1 singles player, Addison Lindsay. The absence of Lindsay created a lineup for the Lady Cats that consisted of two freshmen and one sophomore in singles and three sophomores among their four doubles players. All things considered, they had a good week.

Athlete of the Week: Reese Walizer plays a huge role for the Lady Wildcat volleyball team. At the same time, she collected her fourth career medal at the District 6 Golf Championship last week. She is worthy of consideration for sure. Emma Wolfe and Damien Winner have been running consistently strong for the cross-country teams, so we tip our hats to them as well. However, this week’s honor is going to go to sophomore Kassie Williams from the tennis team, who went 3-0 in match play last week and has demonstrated growth as a player throughout the season.

Looking Ahead: The boys soccer team faces a couple of challenges this week as they take the short trip to Jersey Shore on Monday before hosting Midd-West on Wednesday. The cross-country teams will take part in the PHAC tournament at Shikellamy on Saturday after competing against Jersey Shore on Tuesday. Several other teams are in action just once this week. The fall sports season is flying along. Be sure to get out and catch some of the action before it’s too late.
