Penns Valley girls suffer tough setback at hands of Bishop Carroll

SPRING MILLS – In their annual Laurel Highlands cross-over game on Friday night, the Penns Valley girls opened the night against returning PIAA state champion Bishop Carroll. Carroll came into the contest sporting just one loss on the season.
Despite falling behind early, the Lady Rams battled throughout the contest. But when the dust settled, the Huskies would come out the victors, 60-39.
Offensively, Penns Valley was led by Paige Johnson, who netted a team-high 14 points while teammate Sydnie Dalton added seven in the loss.
The Lady Huskies got strong individual efforts from Emily Lucko, who finished 18. Teammate Adalyn Myers followed her up with 14 while rounding things out was Sarah Miller, who posted 12.
“It wasn’t our best, but our second half was much better,” said Penns Valley coach Terrance Green on the performance. “We had a good attempt but we have to put four quarters together. So that’s what we’re focused on right now since getting so close to districts. I was very proud of their effort in the second half.”

In the first quarter, the Huskies got the game off and running going on a 6-0 run after an opening bucket by Penns Valley’s Lilly Smith
In the run, Emily Lucke had four of those points for Bishop Carroll.
Paige Johnson would break up the run as she broke lose inside and hit a jumper, cutting it to 8-4. But the momentum would quickly go back to Bishop Carroll’s side, as it outscored the Rams 11-2 the rest of the opening stanza.
In the second, the Rams defense was able to clamp down holding the Huskies to 14 points. However, Penns Valley was only able to post eight of their own. When the dust settled ending the first half, Bishop Carroll led 33-14.
“The first half just wasn’t us,” said Green. “We just weren’t ourselves in the first half.”

Penns Valley rallied to instill an early comeback attempt in the third and was able to cut into the Huskies lead.
The Rams opened the period with a 7-3 run, cutting it to a 36-22 contest. In that run, Penns Valley got contributions from Johnson, Sydnie Dalton and Ellie Romig.
But that would be as close as Penns Valley would get.
With battling to the end in mind, the Rams were able to outscore the Huskies in the third, 12-11. But in the final stanza, Bishop Carroll was able to get the best of the Rams, outscoring them 16-13 to secure the 60-39 win.
