Local roundup: Bald Eagle girls defeat rival Bellefonte in season finale

On Monday night, the Bald Eagle Area girls basketball team played host to rival Bellefonte in Laurel Highlands action. The teams battled tooth-and-nail and when the dust settled, it was the Eagles that picked up the 41-31 win.

Bald Eagle used a strong defensive start to get ahead, allowing just three points in the first to go into the next stanza with a 9-3 lead.

The Red Raiders responded with a strong defensive quarter of its own, outscoring the Eagles 9-5 in the second to cut their deficit to 14-12. But in the second half, Bald Eagle was able to stay ahead and build on its lead, outscoring Bellefonte 27-19 through the last two quarters to clinch the 41-31 victory.

The win marked the Eagles’ third victory of the season, as it closed out the campaign with a 3-17 record. For Bellefonte (0-18), it has two more chances to get in the win column, starting against Somerset on Tuesday. That game is set for 6 p.m. at Bellefonte.

The Helsel sister and Sonny Diehl had their way with Penns Valley, compiling a combined 52 points to lead Clearfield past the Rams, 65-60, on the road Monday night. Those efforts were most notable in the first half, where the Bison outscored PV 40-31.

For the Rams, three scorers finished in double figures, with Paige Johnson leading the way with 14 points. Ellie Romig and Elle Dinges each knocked down two treys finishing with 12 and 11 points respectively. Lilly Smith finished with nine points, and Jordan Johnson added eight – five in the second half.

Opposing high-volume scorers was also a theme for Penns Valley boys basketball on Monday. Ev Maines and Braison Patrick combined for 51 of Clearfield’s 75 points to down the Rams, 75-61, as the team pulled away behind a 25-point third quarter.

For Penns Valley, Fletcher Ironside led the way with 18 points, with Noah Patel following him up with 16. Julian Battaglia notched 12 points behind two treys, and Spencer Althouse added six.
