Bellefonte YMCA Stingrays dominate at district tournament
YORK, Pa. — The Bellefonte YMCA Stingrays turned in an impressive performance at the YMCA Central District Championships in York this past weekend, earning multiple personal bests, strong relay swims and several qualifications for the YMCA State Championships.
The team, coached by Lynette Kramer and Dominick Romanini, continues to grow as a competitive program, with swimmers demonstrating strong improvements throughout the season. Even with training in a three-lane, 23.5-yard pool, the Stingrays demonstrated the strength and depth of their program.
Leading the Stingrays was Evelynn Martin (10), who finished as the team’s top point scorer with 67 points. Martin placed second in the 50 back (34.40), third in the 100 individual medley (1:17.22), fourth in the 100 fly (1:21.35), and fifth in the 50 fly (34.61), earning state qualifying times in each event.
She also qualified for states in the 200 individual medley (2:26.79) and 100 back (1:16.75), giving her six individual state qualifying events.
Isabella Bower (12) also earned a state-qualifying performance with a seventh-place finish in the 200 free (2:15.02). Bower added a sixth-place finish in the 500 free (6:06.05)and posted a personal best in the 50 fly (33.55).
Nora Reeder (10) qualified for states in two events, placing sixth in the 100 breast (1:29.76) and sixth in the 200 free (2:26.79). Reeder also competed in the 50 breast and 100 free (1:13.03).
Emily Skrzycki (12) secured a state qualifying time in the 50 back (31.84), dropping two seconds from her previous best. She also recorded personal bests in the 100 individual medley (1:13.57), 200 back (2:36.65), and 50 fly (32.10), also competing in the 200 free (2:29.18) and 200 free (3:09.52).
The Stingrays also posted strong relay performances. The 11-12 girls medley relay (2:32.92), consisting of Anoushka Chawla (11), Emily Skrzycki, Isabella Bower, and Jane Jennings (11), dropped more than three seconds. The 9-10 girls medley relay team (2:49.60), featuring Evelynn Martin, Nora Reeder, Zoe Nelson (10), and Nora Myers (10) saw significant improvement. The 9-10 freestyle relay team consisting of Evelynn Martin, Nora Reeder, Zoe Nelson, and Ava Burget (10) had an impressive four-second drop in the 200-yard freestyle relay (2.26:79).
Additional individual efforts came from Luke Nelson (12), who dropped nearly two seconds in the 50 breast (40.52), Nathan Wong (12), who recorded personal bests in the 50 free (30.02) and 50 fly (33.84), and Reed Skrzycki (10), who improved his time in the 50 breast (47.49) by nearly one second.
The Stingrays will next be represented at the YMCA State Championships in Morgantown, West Virginia, where Bower, Martin, Reeder, and Skrzycki will compete against top swimmers from across the state of Pennsylvania.
