A tradition like no other

The annual Piper Fly-In at William T. Piper Memorial Airport is underway through Saturday night, and as one of its mightiest supporters told us, changes have made the event “a more inviting and friendly fly-in.” We can’t agree more with Cal Arter and the small army of people who organize, run and sustain this wonderful event that celebrates the rich history of Piper Aircraft here in Lock Haven. Aviators and enthusiasts from all over the world visit Lock Haven, many in their colorful single engine Cubs or other models, pitching tents under their wings and enjoying a comradery ...

‘Downtown… no finer place for sure’

New or refurbished, colorful murals. New benches and a bike rack. A solar charging station for phones. A digital kiosk to connect shoppers and visitors to local businesses. A new walking surface. All in an alley off Main Street in downtown Lock Haven that, frankly, has been an eyesore. Thanks, Lock Haven City Planner Abbey Roberts and city leaders and staff for writing the grant to T-Mobile. Thanks, Keystone Central School District students in Fred Hoy’s drafting and design class for providing key help for this project. Thanks, T-Mobile for awarding a $50,000 grant to ...

Schools must remain vigilant

With people of the United States still feeling shock and grief over mass shootings, particularly the massacre of 19 children and two teachers in Uvalde, Texas, last month, school officials across this country we hope have embarked once again on the task of assessing security at their respective educational facilities and regarding students’ participation in various activities. Being ‘honorable, generous, tolerant and respectful’ in (and for) America

The volatility of our world today creates pessimism, confusion, uncertainty ... and eats away at our individual and collective American spirit. We live in a world at war — literally in battle and with words. Just spend even the slightest amount of time on social media, news outlets and watching mainstream television media and you’ll soon be very depressed about life. Do not, dear readers, spend too much of your time watching the mainstream television media or in front of a screen reading or watching talking heads tell you what they want to hear so you can help their ratings. ...

Teacher shortage is a critical challenge for us and our children

We have many challenges facing our American way of life. Our collective well-being. Our productivity. Our quality of life. In our book, one of the more significant problems we face is a lack of qualified school teachers. Here in Pennsylvania, the supply of new teachers has reached “a breaking point,” says Tanya Garcia, deputy secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Why? The number of young adults going into the profession has plummeted. Indeed, there has been a 66% drop in newly issued teacher certificates in Pennsylvania over the past decade. The ...

Not just another day

The meaning of today’s holiday — Memorial Day — should never be taken for granted, nor should it ever be forgotten. Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Take a moment today, please, and remember or say a prayer for or simply acknowledge those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and for the cause of freedom. America is perhaps the greatest defender of freedom around the world because we value more than anything “life, liberty ...
