Local roundup: Penns Valley, Bellefonte girls teams suffer losses

Penns Valley suffered a 56-49 loss at Central Cambira in girls basketball. The Rams were led by Paige Johnson’s 16 points, Sydnie Dalton’s 14 and Ellie Romig’s seven as the loss moves Penns Valley to 7-7.

Penns Valley held a 27-8 lead after the first quarter, but a one-point second quarter hurt the Rams as Central Cambria took a 29-28 lead going into the break.

Bellefonte’s girls basketball team suffered a 84-28 loss to Chestnut Ridge. Chestnut Ridge limited the Red Raiders to single digits in three of four quarters and led the Red Raiders 54-17 by halftime.

Individual scorers were not made available.

• The Lock Haven men’s and women’s track and field teams opened the New Year by sending athletes to the Nittany Lion Open (Penn State) and River Hawk Invite (Susquehanna).

At Penn State, Eric Zalar hit a PSAC qualifying mark with a 18.2-meter throw. Montoursville graduate Josiah Schans’ PSAC qualifying time of 35.18 in the 300 meters is good enough for third all-time in program history. He also hit a PSAC mark in the 60m hurdles (8.11).

On the women’s side, Samantha Trench timed in at 9.24 (PSAC qualifying time) in the 60 hurdles first round at Penn State.

At the River Hawk Invite, Paige Watson finished second in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 11:42.15.

Clarissa Davis finished 3rd in the shot put with a distance of 11.50, and Alannah Irwin finished fifth in the 60 hurdles in 10.25.

Mansfield’s women’s track and field team competed on January 17 at the River Hawk Invite. Minyhah Easterling and Olivia Meisner finished fourth and sixth in shot out with bests of 11.43m and 11.20 meters. This placed Easterling at four and Meisner at sixth in school history. Easterling, Meisner and Blaze Wood all participated in weight throw finishing 10.59 meters (seventh in history) 9.43m (tenth in history) and 7.61m.

Alyssa Parks ended high jumped with a height of 1.38 meters. Samantha Newman placed fourth in triple jump with 10.30 meters.

On the men’s side for Mansfield, Cahsid Raymond took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.84 which broke his previous school record. Dorrian McCargo finished 12th – 7.26, along side Ray Kasili (7.66) and Antonio Green (7.70).

Marcus Quaker placed fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.95. Raymond held on to first place in the 200-meter as well finishing with a time of 22.66 respectively, which places him third in school history.

• The Lock Haven women’s swimming team traveled to Newville, Pennsylvania, to compete in the John A Pidgeon Memorial & Last Chance Invitational.

Lock Haven scored 134 points in the John A Pidgeon Memorial Invitational and 148 in the Last Chance Invitational, both hosted by Indiana (Pa.) at Big Springs High School.

The Bald Eagles returned to the pool for competition for the first time since Dec. 5, after an extended holiday break.

In the John A Pidgeon Memorial, Madison Bortner finished sixth in the 500-yard freestyle, with a finals time of 5:49.99. In the same event, Delaney Stains placed eighth with a time of 7:05.04.

In the Last Chance Invitational, Kate MacAlister finished seventh in the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:24.87. In the same event, Nora Craig finished 10th with a 2:29.52.
