Tennessee’s Weaver sets US record for most hits by a girl at LLWS

MARK NANCE/For The Express Tennessee’s Stella Weaver bats during a game at lamade Stadium this summer.

Stella Weaver stands alone.

No American female player has ever produced more Little League World Series hits than the Nolensville, Tennessee all-star. Weaver broke the record Tuesday afternoon, going 1 for 2 and scoring a run while helping Nolensville edge Nevada, 2-1. Weaver’s three hits at the Series also puts her one shy of tying Japan’s Sayaka Tsushima (1998), who went 4 for 14 at the Series. Tsushima holds the overall record for most hits by a girl at the Series with four.

Weaver had an opportunity to tie or break Tsushima’s mark on Wednesday night when Nolensville plays either California or Rhode Island. That game did not end in time for this edition of The Express. She tied it yesterday by drilling a fifth inning single into right field and igniting what become a game-changing rally.

“That’s crazy to me. Me and Coach Randy (Huth) made a bucket list,” Weaver said. “We did how many hits a girl has ever had in the U.S and I broke the U.S record today.”

Weaver has hit safely in all three Series games and now is 3 for 6 with two runs scored. Reyes also went 3 for 6 in 2009. Weaver has become a media superstar at this Series and continues shining in that spotlight.

In addition to hitting well, Weaver also has excelled in the field and threw a scoreless inning last Monday to open Nolensville’s game against Washington. Mo’ne Davis established herself as the best female pitcher to ever compete at the Series nine years ago and now Weaver is establishing herself as possibly the best girl to ever play here.

“She can hit, she can run and she can play. She can fly around and is super fast. She’s fun to watch,” Huth said. “We definitely love having her be a part of this team.”

Weaver made two spectacular catches in the district final, helping her team beat perennial power Goodlettsville. She produced two key hits in the Southeast championship against Florida and continued coming up clutch against Nevada. There were two outs and no runners on base in the fifth inning when Weaver scorched her historic single into right field.

Weaver made it four straight games with a hit going back to regionals and then showed off her speed to score what eventually became the game’s winning run. Weaver seemed to have jets attached to her legs when she ran from first to third on Gideon Shepler’s single. She then scored on a wild pitch, putting Nolensville up, 2-1.

“We know what she can do on the bases. She’s lightning fast. We know that everything that goes to the backstop, she’s going to take a base,” Huth said. “Even if just skips away a little bit she’s going to get in there and it worked out.”

Weaver’s wheels helped everything work out for Nolensville yesterday and ensure itself no worse than a Final Four American finish here. Her focus was on the game and winning, but Weaver has something extra she can celebrate now.

“Getting that hit was so much fun,” Weaver said. “I wasn’t thinking about it all when I hit it. But once I got back in the dugout I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I just remembered that!’

Now, Weaver has ensured that Little League will long remember her.
