In the parks
Various local parks will offer programs that folks may be interested in attending. All children must be accompanied by an adult in order to participate. The programs may be modified or cancelled in the event of severe weather or community guidelines.
Butterfly Trail Walk
HOWARD — Hiking is a great way to improve both your physical and mental health! Join the Bald Eagle State Park naturalist on Saturday, June 27, at 9:30 a.m., for a 1.87-mile hike on the Butterfly Trail to get some exercise and explore the flora, fauna and park landmarks we come across along the way. This hike is rated easy, but the terrain may be uneven and wet in some areas. All ages are welcome! The trail is very flat, grassy and generally full-sun. The hike will take between 1-2 hours to complete, as our pace will be group-dependent and we will stop to learn and chat. Meet at the Butterfly Trailhead beside Pavilion 6.
Ravens or Crows
RENOVO — What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word raven or crow? Is it spooky or noisy? Do you know the differences between crows and ravens? Come on out to the Kettle Creek State Park’s nature center on Saturday, June 27, at 4:30 p.m., to learn some fun facts about these macabre creatures. Afterward, we’ll make a cool craft for you to take home.
Archery
WATERVILLE — On Saturday, June 27, at 3:30 p.m., at Little Pine State Park, join the Park Educator and get an intro course in “Archery” basics. All equipment will be provided. Meet at the Archery Range in the northern part of the park.
World of Bats
WATERVILLE — At Little Pine State Park on Saturday, June 27, at 8:30 p.m., this program will be focusing on some of the bats’ adaptations, some myths about bats and a fungus that is threatening their population in the “World of Bats.” There will also be a bat count, weather permitting. Meet at the amphitheater.
Mammals of Pa.
RENOVO — Can you guess the animal by feeling its fur? At this program offered on Saturday, June 27, at 7:30 p.m., at Kettle Creek State Park, we will look at different skulls and furs of animals common to Pa. Discover interesting facts about each critter as well. This program is open for all ages! Meeting location will be at the Nature Center.
Trout of Hyner
NORTH BEND — On Friday, July 3, at 3:30 p.m., at Hyner Run State Park, join the park naturalist and learn about the different types of “Trout of Hyner.” Afterward, we may have some time to share fish stories. Meet at the pool.
Fireflies
NORTH BEND — On Friday, July 3, at 8:30 p.m., at Hyner Run State Park, join the park naturalist to learn about “Fireflies” and why they light up nature during this time of the year. Meet at the amphitheater by the pool. Please bring a lawn chair.
SMART Fishing
WATERVILLE — Want to introduce your children to the sport of fishing? This “SMART Fishing” program at Little Pine State Park on Saturday, July 4, at 3:30 p.m., is geared toward teaching others to be responsible anglers. Meet at the boat launch of Little Pine Reservoir.
