Fatal accident

HOUSERVILLE — On Sept. 6, at 6:07 p.m., a four-vehicle, double fatality involved crash occurred on Northbound Interstate 99 in Benner Township in Centre County, near the Shiloh Road exit, according to state police at Rockview.

Police said the stretch of interstate was congested due to an unrelated traffic incident a mile north.

A 2011 Nissan Rogue, 2023 RAM and 2024 Ford Edge were all stopped in the right lane of Interstate 99 after the Nissan and RAM were involved in a separate minor collision.

According to state police, a 31-year-old Boalsburg man, who was operating a 2012 GMC Yukon failed to recognize the stopped traffic and rear ended the Nissan at a high rate of speed. The RAM moved to avoid the oncoming crash, causing the Nissan to careen into the rear-end of the Ford, while the Yukon continued sideways into the left lane where it struck the RAM truck.

The operator of the Nissan, Katharyn Derhammer, who was 33-weeks pregnant, was taken via Life Flight helicopter to Geisinger Danville where both her and her baby later succumbed to their injuries.

The operators of units the GMC Yukon, RAM and Ford Edge reported no injuries and all but the Edge were towed from the scene by Rich’s Amoco.

The scene was reconstructed by the Troop G – CARS Unit and charges for Saunders for driving at an unsafe speed are under investigation.

Undine Fire Company, Bellefonte Fire Company, Alpha Fire Company, Life Link EMS, Mount Nittany Health Group, PennDOT and Rich’s Amoco all assisted on the scene.

Drug possession

TUSSEYVILLE — A 23-year-old man from Alexandria, Pa., was arrested for possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia in Potter Township in Centre County on Aug. 30 after being stopped for a traffic violation, according to state police at Rockview.
